Welcome to the Maths Faculty

I am very proud to be leading such a large, friendly and thriving faculty which has such a key role within the school.

The maths faculty has undergone significant change over the past eighteen months since I was appointed.  The current teaching staff represents a mixture of maturity and experience, and youthful energy.  Recently there have been significant opportunities for teachers at the start of their career to gain additional responsibilities and experience.  The faculty is led by myself and three assistant heads.

I am pleased to say that there is a mutually supportive atmosphere within the faculty in which all staff feel that their contributions are valid and welcomed, and best practice willingly shared.

KS3 results have been consistently good with over 70% of students gaining a level 5 or above.  At GCSE the introduction of the module scheme has helped us to carefully monitor student progress and are therefore confident of a significant increase in the percentage of A*-C grades for our present year 11.  Post 16, along with AS and A2 courses we deliver GCSE resits, ALAN qualifications andn key skills.  We have recently adopted the MEI scheme at A level and are delighted with its practical and student friendly approach.  For the full A level, students study four Pure, one Statistics and one Mechnics module.  There are excellent opportunities for staff who wish to teach at this higher level.

At all key stages revision sessions are held – these are well attended and appreciated by the students and have contributed to the increase in achievement currently being seen within the faculty.  However, there is no room for complacency and we constantly strive to develop the faculty further.  We are committed to raising standards and enhancing students’ experience of Maths.  Along with the opportunities afforded by the Building Schools for the Future project it is an exciting time for the faculty and the school.

Our aim is to establish a culture of high expectations through innovative and committed teaching leading to effective learning.  We continue to work hard in order to afford our students the maximum opportunities in life and welcome any new staff who wish to help us achieve it.
