Welcome to the Visually Impaired Department

Welcome to the VI Faculty

Specialist resourced provision for secondary school students with a visual impairment was established at Hanson in September 2002.

We currently have 3 teachers with specialist qualifications, a technician, 3 Special Needs Assistants and Mobility and Rehabilitation Officer whom we share with both our primary resource bases and the Peripatetic Service. As well as supporting students in lessons we also prepare resources for students using a whole host of specialist equipment and software.

We have two main aims;

The first is to enable students with a visual impairment to access the curriculum by supporting their visual needs.

The second is to develop the student’s ability to function as independently as possible.

As well as working together as a team, we also link in with the other faculties at Hanson to make learning accessible and as inclusive as possible.

We are based in A4, conveniently sited between Music and Food Technology. These two departments provide great aural and olfactory clues to for students with a visual impairment to home in on. You are welcome to call in and see what goes on and have a chat about both the work we and the students do.
