The importance of breakfast
Breakfast makes a major contribution to the nutritional quality of a well-balanced diet. It provides the nutrients that are not always made up for in later meals and snacks. Breakfast should provide about one quarter of daily energy intake.
Research has shown that children who skip breakfast perform less well academically, socially and emotionally, whereas eating breakfast improves children’s problem solving abilities, their memory, concentration levels, visual perception and creative thinking.
Academic performance can be boosted by a high-energy breakfast. Blood sugar levels drop overnight and can be low on waking. Studies have linked low blood sugar levels to poor memory, concentration and learning. Eating breakfast raises blood sugar levels and helps the body to function more effectively.
A drink is a key part of any breakfast. Starting the day dehydrated leads to difficulties in concentrating, headaches and irritability. There is even research to show that people who eat breakfast are more likely to have more nutritionally balanced diets that are lower in fat and higher in carbohydrate compared to those who miss breakfast.
In short, children should eat breakfast every day - whether at home, on the way to school, or at school.

FRUITY FACTS
What exactly is fruit?
Fruit is the fleshy and often sweet part of a flowering plant or tree that contains its seeds.
Why should I eat more fruit?
Fruit contains a wide range of range antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fibre and other phytochemicals - naturally occurring plant compounds which can be beneficial to your health.
Experts say that we can reduce our risk of cancer by up to 20 percent just by eating the recommended 5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables each day.
There is good evidence that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables also helps to lower the risk of heart disease, protect against stroke and high blood pressure and can even help to manage diabetes.
Fruit, along with other plant foods, is a vital component of a healthy balanced diet and is a great source of natural energy. Fruit is typically low in fat and therefore calories, so a diet rich in fruit is a good way to help maintain a healthy body weight.
Fruit is nature’s own Fast Food. It can be cheap and it's readily available. With more exotic choice available than ever before, it's impossible to get bored.
