URGENT NOTICE

To all Parents and Guardians of children

Dear Parent or Guardian

Outbreak of influenza-like illness

Over the last few days there has been an outbreak of an influenza-like illness in some schools in the Bradford district. Please help us bring this episode to an end as rapidly as possible by observing the following simple measures.

The Health Protection Agency have advised :

1)            That any child or member of staff developing a fever should leave the school premises as soon as possible to limit the spread of the illness.

2)            People affected by fever should be encouraged to rest and to drink plenty of water or other fluids. This will speed up recovery. Some Calpol or paracetamol in small amounts should make things more comfortable. Most people affected by influenza – like illness will start to improve in a couple of days. Children tend to get better quicker than adults.

3)            Rarely those affected by influenza - like illness develop breathing problems. If that happens please contact your GP.

4)            If your child suffers from heart or lung diseases or is diabetic, and has not already had a flu vaccination, they should have one as a matter of urgency.

5)            Children and staff affected should not return to the school until they have had at least 48 hours without fever or other flu – like symptoms, because they will still be infectious.

6)            Mouths should be covered when coughing and paper tissues used when noses are blown. The paper tissues should be promptly placed in a waste bin for disposal. Please make sure your child has a packet of paper tissues with them at school.

7)            Because influenza – like viruses can be carried on hands please make sure that hands are washed regularly, particularly after noses are blown or wiped.

8)            If at all possible, those affected should stay away from people who are likely to suffer more serious illness, such as the very young, the elderly and those with chronic health problems.

Your help and co-operation will help us beat off this illness. Thank you.

Yours sincerely
