Sport in Action, Zambia

Sport in Action is a non-government funded charity in Zambia with a central aim of informing young Zambians about the true facts of HIV/Aids. This will hopefully produce a well educated, HIV/Aids free generation.

Sport in Action use sport as their main tool of education, sport not only has its use in attracting interest from young participants but also can be shaped to teach important life choice messages.

Hanson School’s involvement with the project means that more resources can be made available to Sport in Action and schools in Zambia. This is turn will give the opportunity for young Zambians to enjoy sports equipment they have never had before, schools to have the luxury of text books, calculators and other much needed resources, and the chance for Zambia to start moving forward in their fight against HIV/Aids.

The Money Raised so Far

On Friday 19th October year 8 students organised a non-uniform day for years 7 - 11.  The students raised a staggering £1350 for the Zambia Sport in Action project.

Last non-uniform day 2006/2007 Hanson School raised an amazing £1400 for the Sport in Action project. This money has been used to send 20 computers to an education centre in Zambia, which will not only be used for the education of both adults and children, but also in setting up a stronger link between Hanson School pupils and young Zambians with a hope that some understanding of Zambian and English culture can be shared. Money will be also be used to buy some sports resources for the Zambia charity group Sport in Action and educational resources for several schools in Zambia.

The future holds a strong link with Hanson School and the Sport in Action project. In the summer of 2008 several Hanson Sixth Form Students will be selected to travel to Zambia to work as volunteers for Sport in Action, delivering sports sessions and much important HIV education to schools and communities. There will also be the continuation of more fund raising days and events held to raise more money for more sports and educational resources.
