Text Box: Entry requirements  -  5 A-C at GCSE and an A or B at English.
The one year course leading to the AS qualification will consist of 3 units of study:

The Modern Novel (one novel studied)
Texts in Context (one poetry and one drama text)
Shakespeare (coursework – one play)

There will be an examination on Unit 1 in January and Unit 2 in June.
The second year of the course will lead to the full ‘A’ level qualification and will consist of a further 3 units:

Texts in Time (1 pre 1770 poetry and 1 pre 1900 drama text)
Reading for Meaning (Synoptic Unit: War Literature)
Literary Connections (coursework comparing 2 texts)

It is likely that Unit 4 will be examined in January and Units 5 & 6 in June.

Whilst retaining some elements of GCSE English Language, such as creative
writing, AS/A2 English Language is also very different.

The course content for AS is:
Unit 1—Introduction to English Language
This includes an introduction to Lexis (Vocabulary), Grammar, Phonology (the study of sound and pronunciation), Semantics (the study of meaning) and Pragmatics (the study of underlying or implied meaning).

Unit 2—Language and Social Contexts
This will focus on 3 specific social contexts; Language and Occupational Groups, Language and Technology, British Accents and Dialects.

Unit 3—Original Writing
Students will produce two pieces of writing of a maximum combined length of 3000 words.  Students will write a commentary to accompany their writing, which will
explain the choices they made during the writing process.  Students can choose from the following categories:  Writing to Entertain, Writing to Persuade, Writing to Inform to Advise or Instruct.
Unit 1 will be assessed by external examination in either January or June.
Unit 3 will be assessed by external examination in June.

The content of the A2 English Language course is:
Unit 4 - Investigating Language (coursework)
Unit 5 - Editorial Writing (examination in January or June)
Unit 6 - Language Development (examination in June)
This includes detailed study of Language Change (the historical development of English) and Language Acquisition (how humans learn to speak)
