Text Box: ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Grade B, or better in Maths - preferably this grade will  have been obtained at the Higher Tier.

EXAMINATION BOARD:  MEI

METHODS OF ASSESSMENT— Three modules are required for AS; six for A level.  Each module is assessed by a 1½ Hour examination.  All module examinations carry equal weight.

SYLLABUS - The modular syllabuses, potentially, include work in branches of the subject:

Pure Mathematics modules are labelled C1, C2, C3 & C4.  Topics include:
Algebra, Trigonometry, Vectors, Solution of Equations, Coordinate Geometry, Calculus and Numerical Methods.

Mechanics (M1, M2) covers work on moving objects—Acceleration, Forces, Circular Motion, Momentum, Work, Energy and Power

Statistics and Probability (S1, S2) deals with permutations, combinations and probability distributions including the Normal Distribution.

In each of these branches you will meet elements of work extended from GCSE and new topics.  In year 12 you will cover 2 Pure Modules and 1 applied (Mechanics or statistics), leading to AS in Pure Mathematics.  Upon successfully completing the AS course, students will complete the remaining pure modules and 1 more applied leading to an  ’A’  level in Mathematics.  


GENERAL COMMENTS

A grade in ‘A’ level Mathematics has provided access to a very wide range of employment and higher education opportunities, including Mathematics, Engineering, Medicine, Architecture, the Pure Sciences, Business Studies, Economics, Computing and Earth Science.  It is hoped that the AS Mathematics qualification will provide entry qualification into some degree courses which have traditionally required a full A Level.
