Text Box: Entry Requirements  -  5 grade A-C at GCSE including GCSE in Music or Grade 5 Music Theory.

The Music Department offers the Edexcel Examination Board’s two unit ‘A’ Level.   The course currently being offered is one that specialises in the use of technology in music.  Students will be required to use the department’s wide range of equipment and will be expected to take an active part in the diverse musical output of the school

Course Outline:

Unit 1: AS
Part (a)	Practical Work
		1.  Sequencing or recording = 40% of the AS (AL 20%)
		2. Arranging and improvising using technology = 30% of the AS
													(AL 15%)

Part (b) 	Written Work
		1.  Listening and analysing 1 = 30% of the AS (AL 15%)
                      Specialising in History of Western Music and Popular Music and Jazz


Unit 2: A2
Part (a)	Practical Work
		1.  Sequencing, recording and producing = 15%
		2.  Composing using technology  = 15%

Part (b)	Written Work
		1.  Listening and analysing II = 20%
                      Specialising in words and music, and music for the moving image

In both the AS and the A2 course, the emphasis is on coursework valued at 60% with an external exam in Listening and analysing making up the remaining 40%.

Although there is no assessed performance work, the students will use their skills on their instrument in many areas of the course.

It is preferred that candidates wishing to study Music Technology have a grade C or above at GCSE music, or Grade 5 Music Theory and proficiency on one or more
instrument.
